The Amalfi Coast stretches from Sorrento to Salerno--the peninsula,noted for its scenic beauty, is one of the most spectacular drives in Italy. Archeological Sites of Pompeii
Pompeii, one of Italy's most visited sites, is a Roman town that was completely destroyed and buried, along with Herculaneaum, in a catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. ern Naples in the Italian region of Campania, in the territory of the comune of Pompei. It, along with Herculaneum were destroyed, and completely buried, during a catastrophic eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius on 24 August 79 AD.
The city was lost for 1600 years but was rediscovered in 1748. The excavation has shown daily life of ancient Rome better than any other archeological site because the ash which buried the city preserved it.
A ferry or water taxi ride away from the coast are the islands of Capri and Ischia. Capri, a beauty spot since ancient times, is noted as a jetsetter destination, has excellent restaurants and accommodations. Some of the touristic highlights are the Marina Piccola, the Belvedere of Tragara, a scenic promenade lined with villas, the Blue Grotto and ancient Roman ruins from Imperial times. Nearby Ischia is famed as a spa destination.
The striking ruins of Paestum are but one of the archaeological glories of the Amalfi coast.
